The Reason for the Season: Gratitude

A few short months ago, my life changed. I relocated from Los Angeles to begin a new adventure in Bellingham, Washington. While I had visited the Pacific Northwest and lived in Portland, I had never seen the stunning natural beauty of this town, located on a bay between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. Even their motto, “The City of Subdued Excitement” let me know that I was about to live in a place that pretty much was the polar opposite of L.A.

The reason for this change? An incredible opportunity to work with the Non-GMO Project. I’m a long-time advocate for food transparency and accessibility. I’ve devoted a good part of my career to educating consumers about healthy eating, protecting our food supply, and supporting conscious companies. I left my marketing job at Whole Foods Market, rented a house sight unseen and made an absolute leap of faith.

I was already familiar with the Project’s butterfly logo in the grocery aisles —bright, happy and clearly recognizable. I spoke with countless Whole Foods shoppers who trusted the Non-GMO Project Verified seal and purchased their products with confidence. What I didn’t know was that a small, but mighty team (we have now grown to 15 people) had helped guide this grassroots movement into a powerful campaign for transparency across North America.

In the brief time I’ve been here, I’ve been moved by the commitment of so many folks: producers, manufacturers, retailers, consumers, our board of directors, our staff, our volunteers. Everyone is fully engaged and united in supporting our right to know what’s in our food.

We’ve been working hard to launch this website, Living Non-GMO. It is intended to be a place to bring together valuable information, discussions, recipes, and other tools and tips to improve your life. We are super excited to hear from you and are hoping this will become your go-to resource for joining a healthy, thought-provoking, non-GMO community.

For the first time ever, we are launching a donor program to help support our mission to protect and build the non-GMO food supply and support your informed right to know what is in your food. From the beginning, this has been a labor of love: love of food, love of health, love of community. We are asking our friends and neighbors to help us continue to shine the light on the future of our food. We hope you become a sustaining donor; your pledge of $10 or $25 per month means we can continue to create programming and provide enhanced outreach tools.

I’m grateful for the chance to help educate consumers and expand awareness of the Project’s mission. Explore and enjoy our new website and be sure to sign up for our newsletter. During this season of giving, please consider making a donation to the Non-GMO Project at whatever level you can. My life has changed by joining this amazing organization. I hope you will help us continue to grow this people-driven food movement.

From all of us here in beautiful Bellingham, we send you our heartfelt thanks for your trust and support.
