Welcome to Living Non-GMO!

Every day at the Non-GMO Project, we hear from people who are worried about the impacts of GMOs and are looking for ways to make safe, healthy choices for themselves and their loved ones. We are deeply inspired by this growing movement of citizens standing up for a sustainable, transparent food system. It is to all of you that this website is dedicated.

When I helped launch the Non-GMO Project eight years ago, I never imagined how powerful the non-GMO movement would soon become. Back then, when I told people about my work, the response was usually “G-M-what?” And within the food industry, even if companies had heard of GMOs, most were reluctant to sign on to our rigorous standards for GMO avoidance.

So it’s amazing to me that there are now thousands of products successfully verified to the Non-GMO Project Standard. I regularly have moments of awe when I reach to take something out of my fridge or pantry and see that little butterfly on everything. It really doesn’t seem that long ago that I wondered quietly to myself if I would ever see the NGP label on an actual product. Would any food companies really be willing to do the ongoing testing, paperwork, inspections, etc. that the Non-GMO Project Standard required? The incredible answer is a resounding yes—in fact, so far more than 2,200 brands have stepped up, and the list keeps on growing every day.

This is critical, because I continue to believe that voting with our wallets is THE most powerful and pragmatic way to preserve non-GMO choices and protect the future of our food. I do urge everyone to support the mandatory labeling efforts that are now underway in more than half of U.S. states. But we don’t have to wait for government action. While we fight for the same GMO labeling laws enjoyed by more than 60 other countries around the world, we can also change our food supply steadily and immediately by choosing products that are Non-GMO Project Verified.
