How did Trans-Ocean get started? Tell us your story!
Trans-Ocean was founded in 1985 and started operations in a small seafood processing facility on the waterfront in Bellingham, Washington. We were one of the first producers of surimi seafood (aka imitation crabmeat) in the USA and helped introduce this new product type to American consumers. We are still located in Bellingham but have moved to a larger facility and employ over 200 people.
Where do Trans-Ocean’s fish come from?
We use premium wild Alaska Pollock to make our Simply Surimi brand. Alaska Pollock is the world’s largerst fishery and it is carefully managed to ensure sustainability.
Why is it important for Trans-Ocean to support the Non-GMO Project and transparency in our food supply?
This support reflects our corporate mission of building trust with our employees and our customers. Especially in the seafood category, trust and transparency have been historically lacking. We believe in third-party certifications and verification and the Non-GMO Project follows suit along with our commitment to the Marine Stewardship Council (sustainability), American Heart Association (reduced sodium levels), 100% Gluten Free from the Gluten-Free Certification Program. Also, because Trans Ocean is based in Bellingham, WA, we believe in supporting our local Bellingham neighbor and the great work you are doing with instilling confidence and educating consumers on the food supply chain and GMOs.
Which social and environmental causes are most important to Trans-Ocean?
Sustainable fishing and the protection of our ocean’s resources has been an issue that Trans-Ocean has been an early and consistent supporter of. We are also the only certified gluten free surimi seafood processor in North America.
What’s surprising or fun fact about Trans-Ocean products that consumers might want to know?
It’s not imitation crab! It’s a seafood product using Alaskan Pollock (surimi) as its main ingredient. Surimi Seafood has been a part of the Japanese diets for over 100 years!

Simply Surimi Seafood Salad w/ Lemon and Parsley
12 oz. Simply Surimi, Flake Style
2 tbsp. light sour cream
2 tbsp. reduced fat mayonnaise
2 tsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. parsley, chopped
4 tbsp. red onion, small dice
4 tbsp. celery, small dice
2 tsp. capers
garlic, granulated to taste
salt & pepper to taste
In a medium mixing bowl combine Simply Surimi, sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, parsley, red onions, celery and capers. Mix well. Season with garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Mix well, and serve.
Serving suggestion: Serve over a green lettuce leaf and garnish with a twist of lemon.
