  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp peppermint extract (more if desired)
  • 1/2 tsp – 1 tbsp beet juice (depending on desired color)
  • 2-3 candy canes


  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Mix all dry ingredients
  • Add vanilla and peppermint
  • Add in egg and butter, beat together with a mixer
  • Divide dough in half and put in separate bowls
  • Add beet juice (or any natural red food dye) to one bowl of dough and mix
  • Roll a spoonful of each color dough into a log shape and twist together to shape like a candy cane
  • Crush candy canes in food processor or with a rolling pin
  • Dip each cookie into candy cane bits
  • Bake for 10 minutes and let cool
