“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is important to take the time and make the effort to do nice things for one’s self. For many of us, daily demands make it too easy to put ourselves at the end of the line, rather than the head of the class. A little self-love goes a long way to ease the ennui of personal neglect and refresh the body, spirit and soul.

A little self-love goes a long way

Self-pampering is not to be confused with being self-centered. It is not about being indulgent or selfish. It’s about being as kind to yourself as you are to others. This Valentine’s Day, remember to give yourself some extra special attention. February’s cold and wintry weather can wreak havoc on exposed skin, leaving it chapped and dry. A deep, nourishing facial will not only brighten your day but also your beautiful face.

In the same way that we take care to watch what we eat, we can be just as discerning about what we apply to our bodies; and the best way to monitor the ingredients in your personal care products is to make your own. Using USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified products allows you to control what you put on your skin as well as adapt the formula to your specific needs and individual skin type.

Homemade non-GMO skincare mask

Try this simple but effective homemade skincare mask to reinvigorate a dull complexion. Made with only three non-GMO ingredients, all common to home pantries — oats, honey and yogurt, this mask embodies the very best benefits of natural remedies. Oats have absorption properties that extract excessive oil from the skin; when ground into a coarse powder, they act as an exfoliant. Honey is a natural moisturizer with anti-microbial properties that counteract pore-clogging bacteria. And yogurt is full of B vitamins, calcium and lactic acid that refines pores and exfoliates the skin; its rich, creamy consistency creates the base for this luxurious facial mask. Here’s the recipe as shared with us by our friend, Alex.

Living Non-GMO Skincare Mask

Gather non-GMO Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon ground oats
  • 1 teaspoon 100% pure raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon thick unsweetened yogurt

Mix, Apply and Relax

Mix honey and yogurt until thoroughly blended; fold in the oats. Apply mixture generously to your face, creating an even-layered mask, taking care to avoid sensitive skin around eyes. Get comfortable, relax and let sit for 15 minutes. The mask will stiffen slightly as it dries.

Rinse, Reflect, Repeat

Remove mask by rinsing with warm water; for extra exfoliation, using small amount of water, gently massage face with fingertips before rinsing completely. Repeat and follow with favorite toner and moisturizer if needed.

  • Make the mask just prior to application to prevent ground oats from absorbing too much water and becoming more like breakfast than a beauty product!
  • Before applying mask, a hot shower or steam treatment will open up pores.

With three simple ingredients, this easy, non-GMO self-care recipe turns your favorite breakfast items into a soothing, home-made facial that is free from parabens, fragrance and colorants and will deep-cleanse and boost your skin’s moisture content, affording you a little personal self-love this Valentine’s Day.
