As a mom of two and a Health Coach, the aisles of the grocery store are like a second home to me. Being as mindful as possible about my purchases and teaching others to do the same is one of my most important principles.

While I try to purchase Non-GMO Project Verified and USDA certified organic products as often as I can, the reality of the matter is that’s not always possible. Factors such as budget, time in one’s day, and neighborhood access to these options are things that must be respected and considered to make healthier living both sustainable and attainable for all.

It’s because of these factors I truly value the efforts of the Non-GMO Project. When asked why I choose to purchase Non-GMO Project Verified and encourage others to do the same, even if the item isn’t USDA certified organic, these are the reasons that are most important to me:

My Dollar Supports Better Market Standards

Products containing the Non-GMO Project Verified label inherently display a level of integrity. The beliefs and mission of the organization call for companies to be transparent in order to meet the Project’s rigorous Standard. It’s because of this commitment to the Standard that I trust their labeling for my family and will continue to purchase items that feature the Non-GMO Project Verified label.

It’s exciting to know that every dollar I spend on Verified products is supporting better market standards. As more people vote with their food purchases, the market as a whole can shift and ultimately keep up with healthy options we all deserve.

Being aware of the beliefs and standards set by the Non-GMO Project, and the products that earn verification, gives consumers an additional alternative in line with the healthier life they are trying to achieve.

Provides Variety In Brands & Price Points

During just about every shopping trip with my son, we come to a point where he starts to think about what types of snacks he would like to take to school for the week. In addition to his selection of fruits and/or vegetables, he gets to choose what packaged snack he might be interested in and we check out the ingredients together to ensure they aren’t too questionable.

A couple of years ago, there were very few products on the shelf that I felt comfortable letting him eat. On the flip side, the ones I did feel comfortable with were outside of our snack budget.

Thankfully, this has changed as more brands make the effort to become Non-GMO Project Verified. Shopping trips to stores such as Whole Foods and Target have become easier and more varied with the inclusion of Verified products into a variety of brands and even store brand lines.

There are now more ways than ever to find Non-GMO Project Verified choices with:

Non-GMO Project Verification allows me to have a choice in what I purchase so I can eat in a way that’s in line with my beliefs. It’s reassuring to know that, regardless of what store I choose to grocery shop in, the increasing amount of products showing up on shelves will not only help me stick to the standards I’ve set out for myself, but it will also push other brands to improve their practices and ingredients. In the meantime, I will continue to search for the butterfly during my shopping trips and educate others on why it’s important for them as well.
